Hey guys, just wanted to say sorry for getting this up late but anyways hope you enjoy. When writing, it can be hard to remember the character's actions as well as writing about their emotions or/and writing about them talking. It is also hard to match the right action with the right emotion or mood which you are trying to set. Body language is a combination between biological instincts and socialization, for instance socialization can vary widely depending on where that person comes from and what type of person that character is. Also, you might be reading this to tell what your friend is feeling to try to see if you can understand why or maybe you want to see if they are lying or not. So here are a few general body languages that you could use while writing or while trying to figure out what your friend is feeling: Hands & Arms Open palms often symbolise openness and honesty. Hiding Hands A character concealing their hands (behind the back or in a pocket) or busying their hands (carrying/doodling/cooking etc...) can be showing that they don't want to talk or they are hiding something. Crossed Arms If you can see fists then it means that the person is defensive and hostile. If you can see their thumbs sticking up (or see them at all) then they are defensive yet dominant. If you see the hands almost hugging the arms kind of thing then they are insecure, restrained and negative. When a person crosses their arms, they're hiding behind a barrier. Superior types may not cross their arms at all because they feel no need to be defensive and if they do it might be more to do with looking powerful more than anything else. People often have sneaky ways of crossing their arms and hiding themselves. This could be holding another part of their body like their arm or their other hand. Also, it could be by holding something like a bag or a hat. When people hold their hands or arms, it can indicate frustration and the higher up their hands (or hand on the arm) goes, the increase in frustration there is. Hands If someone has their fingers together and all fingers on both hands are touching but there is a gap between the palms, it indicates confidence and superiority. When someone is resting their head on their hand, if they have one finger on their cheek then they are in an evaluation pose, when the person is still interested in what is being said. However, if the person has a flat-palm support then they are bored. The chin stroke is a neutral evaluation; the person has neither negative or positive feelings about what they are hearing. The neck rub shows exhaustion, frustration or/and fear. Our natural instinct tells us to cover our mouth when we lie. As we grow older, the motion becomes less obvious. Face Someone who is generally smiling (not just faking it) will have wrinkles around the eyes. A tight-lipped smile shows the character has a secret or an opinion they don't want to share. Bending the head down and looking up and away is often used as a courtship symbol. This coy smile is considered sexy but also makes dominant personalities want to protect the person smiling. Raising the eyebrows shows submission, lowering them shows dominance. Where you put the characters eyebrows naturally when you design them can affect how the reader perceives them. A sideways glance shows interest and uncertainty, but its meaning depends lot on what it is combined with. What direction someone looks while trying to recall something often shows what they are thinking of. Also, it only happens for a split second. e.g. if they are trying to recall a picture then they will look up and to their left. If they are recalling a picture then they will look to their left. Furthermore, if they are recalling a feeling then they will look down and to their right. If they are talking to themselves then they will look down and to their left. Humans find dilated pupils most attractive. Dilated pupils are also a signal of attraction during courtship and a sign of general interest. Pupil sizes are found to correlate with problem solving; maximum dilation when the problem is solved. When one person catches another person's gaze, holds it and then looks to the side, it shows interest and the possibility of submission. Legs Many people know body language tricks about the face and how to fake a smile but there are a few tips about the lower body; legs often reveal a persons true intensions. A neutral position shows nothing. A common pose where on foot points where the person wants to go or points to who they think is the most attractive person in the group. A dominant position that says the person is not planning to leave. It also shows no fear. Crossed legs shows a closed or uncertain attitude. Crossed arms and crossed legs means no communication at all. Figure four position shows dominance. The leg twine is used to be shy and timid. Liars move their legs a lot.
